CREATE AN ANCHOR

In each ritual, you’ll also use a technique from the behavior-modification system known as neuro-linguistic programming (NLP). NLP was originally developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. The NLP technique you’ll use in this book, called anchoring , will allow you to return to the positive state achieved in your meditation as you go about your day. With anchoring, you create positive feelings through the visualizations in your daily rituals, which are based on the affirmations and emotions you just created.

To do this, once you are in this highly positive state at the end of your ritual, make a unique gesture (such as placing your left hand over your heart or squeezing your fist tightly) and hold it until the positive feelings begin to dissipate. Then, release the gesture. This sets the gesture as an anchor that allows you to recall the positive feelings throughout the day when negativity arises, and it interrupts negative thought patterns that are counterproductive to healing. For example, as an anchor, I use the “okay” gesture by touching the tip of my thumb to the tip of my index finger. Come up with a gesture of your own that is easy to make but one you don’t normally perform. This will anchor that feeling to the gesture. Always hold it until the blissful feelings start to fade.

As you go through your day, pay attention to your thoughts. When thoughts arise that are related to the issue you’re trying to heal, make the gesture to bring back the positive feelings from your visualization and reset your intention for healing. This interrupts the energy of the negative thought. For example, if your issue is prosperity and you notice the thought arising, “I can’t afford that,” or a worry such as, “How am I going to pay for X?” make your gesture. You can even repeat one of your affirmations as you do, such as, “I give thanks I am prosperous.” Do this every time you notice these negative thoughts arising.
